Our Story

Ruth Exley, LCSW founded Restore Therapy LLC as a solo private practice in NE Portland, OR providing Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to children who had experienced abuse and neglect.

During Ruth’s early experience providing clinical care on the front lines and conducting research in hospital settings at New York-Presbyterian: Columbia Medical Center and Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel, it became clear that child psychiatric hospital admissions were on the rise. PTSD was going untreated in children and often masked by other mood or behavior problems. The public mental health system continued to be overwhelmed with high needs and couldn’t care for burnt-out therapists. Furthermore, those with Medicaid insurance had access only to agencies who typically had less experienced/ unlicensed therapists. Ruth became perplexed by the question “Why are the people with the highest mental health needs not getting access to the highest level of care?”

Restore was born out of a desire to solve this problem.

Since inception, Restore quickly gained a positive response from the community and demanded more openings. Our Team has quickly grown and expanded our services to support people of all ages, families and couples. We prioritize taking medicaid insurance so that we remain accessible to those at all income levels.

We love proving care to what we affectionately call “Restore Families” which is where we get the opportunity to wrap our team around a family system and provide care to all who need it.

We have learned that this work is meant to be done together - in connection, as a team. We take wellness retreats annually to Baja together where we learn advanced techniques in how to regulate our bodies and minds as a way to radically forge forward in the challenging role of providing health care.
